Moroccan Female Riders Honored

The renowned international photojournalism competition has honored a series highlighting Moroccan female riders. Through the art of Tbourida, these women are establishing themselves in a historic equestrian tradition, driven by the evolution of civil rights in Morocco.

Captured in August 2025 at Sidi Rahal, the award-winning image shows Ghita Jhiate struggling to control her rebellious stallion in the marine waters. After long facing her father’s prohibition, this passionate rider finally realized her dream by joining pioneer Zahia Aboulait to practice this discipline.

Tbourida represents a national equestrian heritage recognized by UNESCO, whose origins date back to the sixteenth century. This spectacular practice features squadrons galloping in perfect synchronization before triggering rifle fire, thus simulating military cavalry maneuvers.

Long excluded from these martial performances, women have fought hard to secure their place within the troops. As highlighted by the World Press Photo 2026 awards, this gradual inclusion in the arenas was facilitated by the reform of the Moroccan family code in 2004, a major development that strengthened the legal rights of female citizens.
