Moroccan Farmers Fear Economic Impact of Potential Eid Al-Adha Cancellation

The Party of Democratic and Socialist Vanguard (PADS) had proposed to the government to cancel the celebration of the next Eid Al-Adha due to the health crisis related to the coronavirus. This proposal raises serious concerns among farmers who fear "a disaster" for their sector.
"The vast majority of Moroccans do not have the means to buy the Eid sheep. And those who have the financial capacity would do better to pay the purchase price of the animal, intended for the sacrifice, to the Special Fund to Fight the Coronavirus," the PADS had written in a letter addressed to the government requesting the cancellation of Eid al-Adha.
For Abdel Fattah Ammar, president of the Chamber of Agriculture of the Casablanca-Settat region, taking such a proposal into consideration "would be a disaster" for the Moroccan farmer. In addition to the closure of the markets during this period, the Moroccan farmer has been in an exceptional situation for three years due to the drought, he said in a statement, indicating that a possible cancellation of Eid al-Adha would have serious consequences.
The president of the Chamber of Agriculture of the Casablanca-Settat region believes that the cancellation of Eid al-Adha would imply that the government grant compensation to the breeders. Abdel Fattah Ammar also calls for a thorough reflection on the subject.
