Moroccan Expats Face Strict Rules, Fines for Temporary Vehicle Imports

The temporary admission regime allows Moroccans residing abroad to use their vehicle in Morocco without paying customs duties. However, specific rules must be followed, and heavy fines are provided for in case of overruns.

The vehicle must absolutely be re-exported before the expiry of the granted deadline, by its owner or by a person with customs authorization. In case of non-compliance with the deadline, two options are possible: clearance, which involves the payment of duties and taxes as well as a fine, or a request for extension, subject to conditions.

It is important to note that any sale or loan of the vehicle during its stay in Morocco, without authorization from the Customs Administration, constitutes an offense punishable by penalties.

Clearance can be carried out at any customs office in the country. An online simulator, accessible on the website of the Moroccan customs, allows to calculate the amount of duties and taxes.

In case of loss of the temporary admission card, a duplicate can be obtained from the customs office closest to your home, upon presentation of an affidavit. This card, even in duplicate, does not replace the usual circulation documents (registration certificate, insurance, etc.).

Any exceeding of the temporary admission deadline results in financial penalties. The amount varies from 1,000 dirhams for one month of overrun to 10,000 dirhams for more than six months. It is forbidden to drive with a vehicle whose temporary admission has expired, without authorization from customs.
