Moroccan Expats Face Customs Hurdles After Car Theft, New Guide Advises

Moroccans residing abroad (MREs who are victims of theft of their vehicle in Morocco must not leave the country before regularizing the situation with customs. In its latest 2023 guide for MREs, it gives the rules to follow in case of theft.

According to information provided by the Customs Administration, the owners of vehicles declared stolen remain responsible for the applicable import duties and taxes. To regularize the customs situation of their vehicle, they have two options. The first is to pay the corresponding duties and taxes. The second is to guarantee them, either by producing an insurance regularization commitment, or by subscribing a personal commitment to regularize the situation of the stolen vehicle within a period not exceeding one year.

The model of this commitment is provided by the customs services and can be downloaded from the website of the Customs Administration. Vehicle owners can only import another vehicle after regularizing the customs situation of the first vehicle. The commitment subscribed is valid for one year and penalties are provided in case of non-compliance with this deadline.

Moroccans residing abroad are also advised to contact the customs services to obtain advice and additional information regarding the regularization of the customs situation in the event of vehicle theft.
