Moroccan Expats Face Bureaucratic Hurdles at Consulates Abroad, Parliament Finds

The House of Representatives has initiated a temporary exploratory mission in the Kingdom’s consulates abroad. It made it possible to record the complaints of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) about certain administrative procedures.

Members of the Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Islamic Affairs and MRE Committees, represented in the House of Representatives, carried out this exploratory mission in 5 Moroccan consulates, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. These are the Moroccan Consulates General in Milan, Marseille, Brussels and Amsterdam, visited in June and July 2019.

During the mission, the parliamentarians noted the absence of a mechanism for monitoring files, a lack of coordination between the administrations issuing documents to MREs, especially those concerning the civil status, the implementation of the family code and cases before the Moroccan courts. All these complaints were recorded in a 73-page report.

In addition, recommendations were also made by the members of this exploratory mission to facilitate the task of MREs. They proposed the computerization of civil status circuits and the digitization of archives, as well as the acceleration of administrative and judicial procedures concerning MREs, the improvement of call center services in consulates and better use of the toll-free number to collect information and inquiries.

Nearly 5 million MREs are established in various countries abroad, of which 50% are women, or 12% of Morocco’s population, the same daily reminds. In total, nearly 85% of the Moroccan community abroad is settled in Europe.
