Moroccan Expats Allowed Summer Return Under Strict COVID-19 Conditions

Although the Marhaba 2020 operation is canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) can return to the country during the summer period. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Cooperation, Nasser Bourita, indicated that this return will only be possible under strict conditions.
According to the minister’s explanations, these conditions are of four types. First, the opening of Moroccan land and air borders. To date, these borders remain closed due to the health crisis related to the coronavirus. Once reopened, MREs will be able to return by ferry or flight. Secondly, the travel conditions in the transit countries to Morocco. Thirdly, the evolution of the epidemiological situation both in Morocco and in the world with the risk of a resurgence of a new wave of contamination. The last condition concerns the health protocol.
Upon arrival in Morocco, MREs will likely have to undergo the health protocol applied to Moroccans stranded abroad who have recently been repatriated. This means that MREs will be placed in quarantine for 9 days and undergo two PCR tests. Those who test positive for COVID-19 will be placed under treatment. Conversely, those who test negative will be able to return to their homes and families.
