Moroccan Expats Allege Decade-Long Real Estate Fraud in Midelt

Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs) claim to have been victims of a real estate scam in Midelt for years. They are calling on the competent authorities to open an investigation to shed light on this matter.

The MREs denounce "serious dysfunctions and excesses" in the management of a real estate cooperative in the city of Midelt. In a statement of which Al3omk received a copy, they state that they "had joined this cooperative since 2012 on the basis that it depended on the Water and Forestry Administration, which had given the project a credible and reliable character; however, reality later revealed premeditated intentions on the part of the cooperative’s leaders to serve their personal interests at the expense of Moroccans of the world."

The victims further explain that "the cooperative’s leaders had collected large sums of money from members without holding general assemblies or presenting periodic financial reports," specifying that "the purchased land is located in a remote rural area, consisting of an arid plot that the office claims to have acquired for billions of centimes, while work has been stopped for years and property taxes have accumulated due to mismanagement."

The MREs assure that their requests for information on this matter, addressed to the management office, have remained unanswered and that some of them have even been "threatened" and invited to take legal action "if the situation does not suit them." Faced with this situation, the victims have called on the competent authorities, particularly the Ministry of the Interior, the Court of Auditors, and the public prosecutor’s office, to conduct an audit of the cooperative’s accounts and the assets of its members, emphasizing that "continuing to remain silent on this file harms the kingdom’s image and seriously undermines citizens’ trust in state institutions."
