Moroccan Expatriates Protest Lack of Parliamentary Representation

A group of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) demonstrated on Thursday morning in front of the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad in Rabat to protest against the organization’s inability to work for the parliamentary representation of Moroccans of the world.
In support of the "Initiative for Dignity and the Right to Full Citizenship", these MREs denounced the "marginalization" suffered by the Moroccan diaspora abroad in terms of political and electoral participation in the constituencies of residence abroad.
The initiative led by Ali Jedo, president of the White Dove Organization, deplores "the inability of the CCME council, for more than 15 years, to present an image or a proposal for the parliamentary representation of Moroccans residing abroad, which is the main mission for which it was created."
"The steel wall built between this institution and the Moroccan community abroad has meant that full citizenship has not been achieved, and the CCME has failed to raise an advisory opinion to King Mohammed VI," can be read in the statement of the Initiative for Dignity and the Right to Full Citizenship.
The demonstrators recalled Article 17 of the constitution, which stipulates that "Moroccans residing abroad enjoy the rights of full citizenship, including the right to be voters and eligible. They can stand as candidates in elections at the level of the lists of local, regional and national electoral constituencies. The law sets the specific criteria for eligibility and incompatibility. It also determines the conditions and procedures for the effective exercise of the right to vote and to stand for election from the countries of residence."
