Moroccan Drone Strike Kills 4 Polisario Members Amid UN Envoy's Sahara Visit

Four members of the Polisario Front were killed and two others wounded in a Moroccan drone attack in the Mehaires region, according to sources close to the Sahrawi Movement for Peace (MSP).

This Moroccan attack in the Sahara was recorded while the UN Special Envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, was conducting his regional tour in the area. In a letter addressed to the diplomat and to which La Razón had access, the MSP said it was "extremely concerned" that "just one day after his arrival in the region, we must again regret losses of human life in an area, in theory, under the supervision of peacekeepers and subject to a ceasefire decreed by the UN".

For the MSP, the priority in the current circumstances, rather than taking the pulse of the parties, should be to end the attacks as soon as possible and consolidate the gains. "We cannot allow our people to continue to bleed and perish in an asymmetric and impossible war, at a time when dialogue, peaceful means and international legality are powerful and irreplaceable instruments for settling disputes," it specifies.

And to add: "The MSP, assured of your firm commitment to a peaceful settlement of the conflict, renews its trust in you and urges you to use all your powers of persuasion and moral authority during this first regional tour to ensure respect for the ceasefire and put an end to the loss of human life".

A difficult, if not impossible, mission for De Mistura. Already, the Polisario Front representative to the UN, Sidi Mohamed Omar, has hinted that they do not expect much from the diplomat’s visit.
