Moroccan Doctors Threaten Strike Over Unpaid Salaries Amid COVID Surge

Moroccan resident and intern doctors have written to the government to demand the respect of commitments, concerning the payment of their salaries and on-call allowances. A threat of paralysis looms over the sector.
As frontline actors in the management of Covid-19, these resident and intern doctors are dissatisfied and have made it known. They have once again brandished their demands, at a time when Morocco is preparing to face another wave linked to the Omicron variant.
In a statement signed by the national commission of internal medicine and residents, these actors denounced the delay in the payment of their salaries and on-call allowances. Their colleagues in certain university centers have been waiting for their salary for nine months.
The Association also called on the ministry to settle the on-call allowances that have not been paid in many university hospital centers across Morocco, denouncing the policy of procrastination used by the government to resolve their problems.
Regarding the opening of two hospital centers in Agadir and Tangier, the commission has requested the acceleration of the work "in order to develop the health offer in these two regions, on the one hand, and to expand the possibilities of hospital training for doctors and students, on the other hand."
