Moroccan Doctors Sentenced for Illegal COVID-19 Test Scheme in Fès

Two doctors from Fès, accused of trafficking in Coronavirus PCR tests, were each sentenced to 6 months in prison with a fine of 5,000 dirhams. The verdict was handed down on Wednesday by the Criminal Chamber of the Court of First Instance.
The judge also declared the victims’ request admissible, urging the defendants to pay the sum of 60,000 dirhams in damages. Furthermore, the accused who had been prosecuted while at liberty can no longer recover the criminal bail of 30,000 dirhams.
In November, a doctor working at the University Hospital Center of Fès had been arrested in the act of receiving a sum of 500 dirhams from a woman. The accused had performed a Covid-19 PCR screening test on one of his relatives.
The preliminary investigation allowed the investigators to trace back to his accomplice, a colleague who was practicing in the same establishment. In total, the two accused had carried out more than 50 Covid-19 screening tests at the homes of patients, whose names were recorded in the hospital’s database. A service they charged 500 dirhams for.
