Moroccan Diplomat's Spouse Arrested After Drunken Incident in French Restaurant

A diplomatic incident was narrowly avoided on Saturday in Dole, in the Jura. The husband of the Moroccan vice-consul in Dijon was arrested by the police after causing trouble in a restaurant.

The events took place on Saturday evening in a restaurant in the city center of Dole. According to witnesses, the man presented himself at the restaurant reception, clearly drunk, and asked for help with his vehicle, whose tires were deflated. He spoke very poor French and asked the hostess for a toothpick to change the chip on his cell phone, as he was unable to reach his wife. He sat at the entrance, occupying a large table for eight people, as if he were at home. The situation then degenerated and the man started shouting at the owner in Arabic, reports the newspaper Le Progrès.

The owner then called the police and three officers quickly arrived on foot, joined by a vehicle. Outside, the owner heard screaming and saw the law enforcement officers handcuffing the man and taking him away. Things really degenerated at the police station, where the individual, very agitated, tried to disarm an officer. He was placed in a sobering cell and explained that he was the husband of the Moroccan vice-consul in Dijon and that as such he held a diplomatic passport. He was released after presenting this document, but this does not mean that he will not be prosecuted. The public prosecutor’s office does not rule out requesting the lifting of his immunity.
