Moroccan Diaspora Homecomings Surge: 2.9 Million Return in 2019, Up 4%

According to the Customs and Indirect Taxes Administration (ADII), more than 2.9 million Moroccans living abroad (MRE) returned to Morocco during the Marhaba 2019 campaign; which represents an increase of 4% compared to 2018.
The breakdown by point of entry shows that the Tanger Med port is the main entry point for MREs with a 23% share of total entries, followed by Mohammed V airport (12%), the ADII specifies in its 2019 activity report. According to the administration, the number of MRE entries has recorded an average annual growth of 5% over the past five years.
During the Marhaba 2019 campaign, 44% of MREs traveled to Morocco by air while 38% chose the maritime route, the same source said. Thus, entries by land and air gained 5 points compared to the 2018 campaign, while the maritime route recorded a 5-point decline.
Similarly, the examination of entries by office, between 2018 and 2019, shows an increase in entries at the port of Al Hoceima of 181% and at Bab Melilla and Bab Sebta (61%), as well as a decline at the port of Nador (28%).
