Moroccan PM Denies Plans for US Military Base in Western Sahara

The Head of Government, Saâdeddine El Othmani reacted to the announcement of the probable future installation of an American base in the Moroccan Sahara.
In an interview with the Saudi television channel Asharq News, he denied the existence of any coordination between Morocco and the United States for the installation of an American military base in the Sahara. Last week, sources close to the file had confirmed to Hespress that the United States intended to inaugurate a military base in the southern provinces of the kingdom very soon.
Speaking on the US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, Mr. El Othmani stated that the kingdom has obtained guarantees from the Trump administration on its maintenance. He stressed that there is no correlation between this decision and the normalization with Israel. He also assured that this normalization will in no way affect Morocco’s position on the Palestinian issue.
