Moroccan Customs Raid Gold Shops in Youssoufia Amid Counterfeit Jewelry Concerns

Customs services have raided shops known for selling gold in the Hassani district of Youssoufia.
The operation took place a few days ago. On the arrival of the customs officers, several merchants carrying out their activities in this district well known under the name of "Qaysariyat Al-Dhahab" (the gold market), hastened to close their shops. Subsequently, the authorities decided to seal several gold sales outlets after their owners refused to show up on site, local sources report.
This raid by the customs officers follows rumors of the presence in Youssoufia of counterfeit jewelry, a potential theft, clandestine workshops and falsification of hallmarks. According to merchants, the allegations relayed by the inhabitants of Youssoufia are unfounded. According to their explanations, this raid is only a usual legal procedure regularly carried out by the customs services in order to update and re-register the licenses of professional jewelers, in accordance with the laws governing the profession. It aims to protect jewelry against fraud.
