Moroccan Customs Official Sentenced to 12 Years, Fined Millions for Corruption

Twelve years of imprisonment and the payment of a fine of 100,000 dirhams. This is the judgment handed down by the Court of Appeal of Marrakech, on Wednesday, July 22, 2020, against H.M, who had held the position of receiver of the Regional Directorate of Customs.

In addition to the court of appeal, the Criminal Chamber of first instance in charge of financial crimes near this Court also sentenced the accused to repay the sum of 59 million dirhams to the Customs Directorate, which had joined the civil party during the trial. The former receiver was also ordered to pay damages, set at 5 million dirhams.

H.M. was prosecuted in detention at the Loudaya prison in Marrakech, as part of a case of embezzlement and breach of trust. Subject to an international arrest warrant issued by the judicial police of Marrakech, he was arrested in July 2019 by Interpol in a European city. It was not until September of the same year that he was extradited and handed over to the Marrakech police services to answer the charges against him, the same source said.
