Moroccan Courts Take Landmark Steps to Combat Domestic Violence

A study published by the Federation of Women’s Rights Leagues shows the great interest that Moroccan courts have in cases of violence against women. It cites several "revolutionary" decisions handed down by three courts, which give hope for a decline in the phenomenon, in addition to reassuring women.
Psychological support, restraining orders, prohibition of expelling the wife from the marital home. These are all decisions handed down by courts against aggressive men, perpetrators of domestic violence.
Prohibition by the Court of Appeal of Taza for a violent husband to approach his wife or contact her for a period of one year, decision to commit an aggressive spouse to a specialized institution for psychotherapy by the Court of First Instance of Oujda, or even, conviction in Larache of a son not to have any more contact with his mother or approach her for a year, after being accused of violence against his parents. The list goes on!
The daily Al Massae states that the same study mentions several other decisions that have firmly condemned perpetrators of sexual harassment, in particular. In this regard, in cases of sexual harassment, several public prosecutors’ offices have taken immediately applicable protective measures, particularly in cases of expulsion from the marital home.
In total, 165 people were prosecuted for refusing the right of return to the woman expelled from the marital home, reveals the same study published by the Federation of Women’s Rights Leagues. But also, 29 cases of sexual harassment at work, 129 cases in public spaces and 56 cases on the Internet, details the same source.
