Moroccan Courts Face Backlog Crisis, Prosecutor Takes Action to Expedite Cases

Faced with the accumulation of pending cases in Moroccan courts due to the health crisis, the public prosecutor’s office has taken measures to speed up procedures in order to deliver justice, within a reasonable time, to the many defendants held in pre-trial detention.
Due to the health crisis, several Moroccan courts have not been able to schedule the trials of defendants who remain in pre-trial detention. Some trials have even been postponed by more than a year, without judgment. Thus, the pending cases have accumulated to such an extent that a single judge in service at the Casablanca court or court of appeal can find himself with more than 80 files, reports the daily Al Massae.
To address this problem of accumulation of unresolved cases, to which is added the lack of human resources and courtrooms, the President of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Mohamed Abdennabaoui, plans to implement a plan to accelerate judicial activity in order to decongest the courts, while ensuring the health of citizens and litigants. But pending a normal resumption of activities, remote hearings that have produced convincing results will continue, the public prosecutor’s office said.
