Moroccan Court Upholds 20-Year Sentence for Rif Protest Leader Zefzafi

Barring a political solution, Nasser Zefzafi will serve the 20-year prison sentence handed down by the criminal chamber on June 28, 2018 and confirmed by the Casablanca Court of Appeal in April 2019. Last Friday, the Court of Cassation in Rabat confirmed the appeal verdict, thus judicially closing the file of the detainees of the Hirak Rif.
The sentences handed down against the Hirak Rif activists have been confirmed on appeal. Mohamed Aghnaj, a member of the defense committee for the Hirak detainees, announced the bad news on Friday, expressing his surprise at the treatment of the case by the Court of Cassation. He believes that the solution that remains for this case is "purely political". Without going into details, he stressed that the defense lawyers have not yet received the justifications of the Court.
For the record, eight detainees including Nasser Zefzafi, the leader of the Rif demonstrations, and Nabil Ahamjik, have been in prison since 2017. These two detainees have been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
