Moroccan Court Ruling Sparks Outrage in Amine Chariz Death Case

The Court of Appeal of Agadir sentenced one of the five defendants held in custody in the case of Amine Chariz, a 22-year-old man who died under mysterious circumstances on February 8, and acquitted the other four. Insufficient for the victim’s family, who demands justice.
One of the defendants was sentenced on Thursday to six months in prison and a fine of 10,000 DH. As for the four other co-defendants, they were found not guilty. Amine Chariz’s family is in shock and saddened by the outcome of the trial. On social media, they expressed their discontent and received the support of many Internet users. The hashtag #justicepouraminechariz is gaining momentum.
The facts date back to February 2022. It had been reported on social media that a fight had broken out between young people on the evening of Saturday, February 5, in a restaurant in the Sonaba district of Agadir. Amine Chariz, a 22-year-old man, was admitted to the emergency services of the Hassan II hospital. On Tuesday, his death was announced on Instagram by Internet users, but also by his family. According to the victim’s relatives and friends, the public prosecutor near the court of first instance of Agadir ordered the opening of an investigation to elucidate the young man’s death. Some Internet users mention a death by car accident (they say that Amine jumped out of the car himself), while others talk about a murder.
Subsequently, five individuals (4 boys and 1 girl) were arrested and then placed in custody as part of this case. Two of them were prosecuted for premeditated murder, while the other three were prosecuted for participation.
