Moroccan Carpenter in Australia Files Lawsuit After Workplace Abuse Caught on Video

Ilyas Elkharraz, a 23-year-old Moroccan, was subjected to degrading treatment from his co-workers in a carpentry workshop in Australia. He was suspended upside down and slapped by them, laughing, while one of them filmed the scene.
In the video, one of the young man’s colleagues can clearly be seen inflicting slaps on him, while the others laughed. "I felt like a piece of meat about to be cut," Ilyas said. And to add: "After a week, I started having flashbacks. I had nightmares. It’s as if I was a cow, upside down."
Ilyas left Morocco for Australia and worked in this workshop for three years before resigning after being a victim of abuse on several occasions. He filed a complaint with the court against the owner of the workshop. His lawyer, Tony Carbone, from the Carbone Lawyers firm, deplored these acts which could have caused serious injury to his client, reports nine.com.au.
"If the thing they tied around his legs broke or loosened and he hit his head on the ground, you would now be dealing with brain damage or quadriplegia," the lawyer points out. In addition, WorkSafe Victoria, the state agency responsible for occupational health and safety, has assured that it has opened an investigation into the incident.
