Moroccan Car Rental Industry Crisis Linked to Employee Suicides

Car rental companies have reported four cases of suicide among their employees, including one in Marrakech, one in Agadir and two others in Casablanca.
Mohamed Alami, president of the Association of Car Rental Companies without Drivers in Morocco (ALASCAM), confirmed these deaths. According to him, the disastrous economic situation of the companies would have led some employees to take their own lives. Since the entry into force of the state of health emergency and confinement, car rental companies have been hard hit by the health crisis, with the result that work has stopped. So, no more income, no more salaries. Meanwhile, expenses and bank interest rates are accumulating.
"The number of bankrupt companies exceeds the number of deaths caused by covid-19," said Mohamed Alami in an interview with Le360. Car rental professionals fear the deterioration of their situation. Especially since their sector is dependent on tourism - 78% of car rentals in the country are related to tourism. Yet this sector is also severely affected by the health crisis.
However, car rental professionals are counting on domestic tourism to regain financial health. Already, the price of rental cars has been reduced by 50 to 66%. Enough, it is hoped, to stimulate the clientele.
