Moroccan Butcher Sentenced to 15 Years for Killing Wife Over Loan Dispute

The butcher who dealt fatal blows to his wife because she refused to take out a 10,000 dirham loan to support his bankrupt business is sentenced to 15 years in prison. The criminal sentence was handed down by the criminal chamber of the Safi Court of Appeal.

In these times of pandemic, there are many small traders who have suddenly found themselves in difficulty. The butcher had asked his wife for help so that she could take out a 10,000 dirham loan. He himself could not honor a previous loan and could not claim another one.

But the wife categorically refused to grant the latter’s request. The result is a violent argument between the two spouses, followed by fatal knife blows dealt by the butcher to his wife in the heart area. The victim falls to the ground, bathed in blood, within the walls of the marital home in the locality of Jammâate Shim. She dies a few minutes later, reports the daily Assabah.

After the tragedy, the butcher hastened to alert the victim’s family to announce her death, before surrendering to the royal gendarmerie brigade. He admitted that his intention was not to kill her but just to threaten her so that she would give in to his request. But the irreparable had already been done. The autopsy performed on the victim’s body later revealed that the death had been caused by a traumatic hemorrhagic shock.

During the interrogation, and even before the Attorney General of the King near the Court of Appeal of Safi and throughout his trial, the defendant maintained the same confessions. He was granted mitigating circumstances, since he had no criminal record, reports the same source.
