Moroccan Business Group Seeks Delay on EU’s ’Euro 6’ Emissions Standard

In a request made since July, the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) is asking for time before the implementation of the anti-pollution standard called "Euro 6" already in force in Europe and which will be applied from January 2023 to Moroccan carriers.
The "Euro 6" standard is one of the alternatives found to fight against environmental pollution, reduce toxic gas emissions from vehicles, especially heavy goods vehicles. Thus, "Euro 6" aims to fight against carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, unburned hydrocarbons, and particles. It is in the context of the implementation of this measure that the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) has written to the Moroccan Transport Department, to request a 30-month delay.
It justifies its request by the fact that Moroccan carriers have not yet recovered from the consequences of the Covid-19 health crisis, not to mention the current economic instability that is having repercussions on all sectors. For the CGEM, compliance with this standard requires additional costs and the current circumstances do not allow Moroccan carriers to cope with it.
However, an importer interviewed by Le Matin pointed out that for his part, the implementation of this standard will not pose any problem. "First of all, this standard has been known for a long time and many new trucks and buses imported into Morocco by major European brands already meet it. The price of these trucks is therefore already integrated by the market and this will not have a significant impact. Furthermore, the change in standards for new vehicles does not require professionals to change their trucks immediately, they will only change them when they reach the end of their useful life or financing," he stressed.
