Moroccan baby boom" in Spain
The Muslim population now represents 5% of the inhabitants in Spain, driven by strong demographic dynamics. A recent study reveals that nearly two-thirds of immigrants are originally from Morocco.
The country has between 2.4 and 2.5 million Muslim residents at the beginning of 2025. According to the CEU CEFAS Demographic Observatory, relayed by El Debate, the Moroccan community includes 1.79 million first-generation immigrants and 680,000 people born on national territory.

The geographical origin of these arrivals is particularly targeted. The African continent provides 85% of these first-generation immigrants, and the study specifies that "nearly 65% of the total was born in Morocco", far ahead of countries like Pakistan, Senegal or Algeria.
This presence is significantly reflected in the younger generations. About 11% of babies born in Spain in 2024 had at least one Muslim parent, a rate that rises to 28% in the province of Almería and 27% in Girona.
The fertility of women, although showing a recent downward trend, particularly among Moroccan women, remains much higher than the average. The report points out that more than 90% of them are married at the birth of their child, but have an extremely low employment rate.

This document also identifies various socio-economic integration challenges, pointing to high unemployment rates and high poverty relief subsidies. At the same time, one million of these immigrants have already acquired Spanish nationality, raising the question of their future electoral weight.
