Moroccan Asylum Seekers in Luxembourg Drop Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

14 applications for international protection have been filed by Moroccans since January 2020 in Luxembourg. This request, which allows applicants to obtain refugee status or benefit from subsidiary protection, has seen a significant decline in 2020 compared to last year.
According to the immigration directorate, this drop has been observed in the statistics since April 2020 with 10 applications for all nationalities. 94 applications were recorded in July compared to 133 during the same period in 2019.
Since January 2020, 537 applications have been received compared to 1,196 for the same period in 2019. This reduction in protection applications is explained by the health crisis due to the coronavirus.
While the largest number of protection applications since January 2020 comes from Syria (+121), the least significant has been recorded in Morocco. The Kingdom is overtaken by Algeria (+17) and Tunisia (+18).
