These detainees, often craftsmen or construction workers who left to seek a livelihood, face the severity of Algerian law. Sentenced to prison terms ranging from 10 to 15 years for serious charges such as human trafficking or the formation of criminal gangs, they are described by their loved ones as simple victims of smuggling networks and online scams.

The urgency is also sanitary. The correspondence alerts to the alarming health condition of many prisoners, suffering from chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart problems. Families fear that continued detention may endanger their lives and implore President Tebboune to offer a "balm on the wounds" by allowing their return.

This case is one of the thorniest points in the relations between Rabat and Algiers. While estimates indicate that nearly 850 Moroccans are incarcerated in the neighboring country to the east, human rights activists call for overcoming political tensions to prioritize a humanitarian solution, similar to previous repatriation operations.
