Moroccan Anti-Racism Groups Sound Alarm on Rising "Negrophobic" Hate Speech

In Morocco, the multiplication of hate messages and "negrophobic statements" published on social media in recent weeks, as well as the revival in Morocco of far-right concepts from Europe or the United States, such as the "great replacement" or the "migratory invasion", are worrying several associations, including the Anti-Racist Group for the Support and Defense of Migrants (Gadem) and the Network of Migration Journalists (RMJM).

A campaign of hatred towards non-Moroccan black people living in Morocco? The Anti-Racist Group for the Support and Defense of Migrants (Gadem) denounces racist remarks, stigmatization, discriminatory discourse, and false content disseminated on social media, reports RFI. Considering itself also targeted by this campaign of hatred, the group sees it as an "attempt to manipulate public opinion". However, Gadem did not comment on the individuals or groups behind this campaign.

This campaign leads the group to draw a parallel with the attacks that had targeted Moroccans living in Spain in June, particularly in the city of Torre Pacheco. It believes that these attacks are part of the same logic. At the end of July, Dounia Msfersser, president of the Moroccan Network of Migration Journalists, had also, in a press release, condemned this wave of hateful messages and called on the Moroccan media to deconstruct these racist discourses. "We fully invite them to act as information media favoring perspective, analysis and fieldwork to fight against misinformation, attempts at manipulation and dramatization around foreign migrations in Morocco," she said.

Other actions have been taken by the network. Among them, a study on the media coverage of migration issues in Morocco. The network deplores "the absence of the voices of migrants" and "the predominance of security angles".
