Moroccan Actor Faces Prison for Alleged Insults to Islamic Symbols

Actor Rafik Boubker, accused of having attacked the symbols of Islam, has cause for concern. He risks up to 5 years in prison and a fine of up to 500,000 dirhams.
Placed in custody at the headquarters of the Casablanca police prefecture, the actor risks being convicted under Article 5-267 of the Moroccan Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of 6 months to 2 years and/or a fine of 20,000 to 200,000 dirhams, in case of outrage to the symbols of Islam, the monarchy or attack on the sovereignty of the kingdom.
The presence of aggravating circumstances, such as speeches or threats in public places or through means of communication, could increase the sentence and lead Rafik Boubker to a sentence of 2 to 5 years in prison and a fine ranging from 50,000 to 500,000 dirhams.
In a video posted on social media, Rafik Boubker, apparently intoxicated, had insulted imams and pillars of Islam. The actor would have tried to make amends, after regaining his senses.
