Moroccan Activists Launch Campaign to Empower Rape Survivors to Speak Out

The Masaktach collective has just launched an appeal to rape victims in Morocco. Formed in September 2018, during the same period as the Khadija and Saad Lamjarred cases, the Masaktach collective calls on victims to break the walls of silence and fear to denounce their tormentors.

The Masaktach (I will not be silent) collective is very committed on the issue. It considers that "the speech of the survivors must be freed, so that fear changes sides". The awareness campaign that this collective has just launched is a call for testimonies on social networks. The goal is simple: to encourage raped women to denounce their rapists in order to seek justice before the competent courts, reports Telquel.

"Our Facebook and Twitter inboxes are open. We will publish the testimonies you send there. Denounce these predators who act with impunity, comforted by your silence," explains the collective in a message posted on February 9.
Men "who have witnessed assaults or attempted assaults are also called upon to denounce them". "Only the initials of the aggressors will be published," the collective reassures.

In less than 48 hours, the collective has already received several testimonies, some of which are very serious, thus revealing the drama that many women are living.

"We hope that these testimonies will help facilitate the judicial work of combating violence against women: rapes are crimes that are prescribed after 20 years. Sexual assaults are offenses that are prescribed after 5 years," the collective reminds on its Facebook page.
