Montpellier Mayor Offers Condolences After Teen Killed in World Cup Celebration Incident

Following the death of a Moroccan teenager hit by a car after the France-Morocco match in Montpellier on Wednesday evening, the mayor of the city presented his condolences to the victim’s parents and loved ones.
According to a press release from the Hérault prosecutor’s office, the tragedy occurred during the celebration of France’s victory over Morocco in the World Cup semi-finals. A driver violently left the line of vehicles in front of him and hit a 14-year-old boy, before fleeing.
The teenager died from his injuries, the note specifies, adding that an investigation has been opened for "aggravated fatal blows with a weapon (the vehicle)". Informed, the mayor of Montpellier, Michaël Delafosse, went to the boy’s family to convey his message of compassion and condolences.
"We are all in shock and consternation at this terrible tragedy, I extend my condolences to the parents, and loved ones," the mayor wrote, hoping that "the perpetrators of this heinous act will be found and tried."
The car was quickly found empty in the neighboring Mosson district "and placed under seal," according to the prefecture. The driver, for his part, was still actively being sought.
