Money laundering: Morocco ranks in the top 10 safest countries in Africa
The Basel verdict is in. In the global fight against dirty money and the financing of terrorism, Morocco is holding its own on the continental scale. Ranked 100th out of 177 countries by the 2025 Basel Index, the Kingdom is among the top performers in Africa, while still remaining in a zone of moderate vigilance globally.
This is a signal of stability sent to international markets. With this ranking, Morocco falls into the category of nations presenting "moderate risks". A position that validates the efforts made to align the national legislative framework with international standards, but which reminds that the battle for total financial transparency has not yet been won.
On the African continent, the performance is noteworthy. The Kingdom joins the exclusive circle of the ten countries least exposed to money laundering risks, on par with nations such as Botswana, the Seychelles, Tunisia, Egypt or Senegal.
The Index, developed by the Basel Institute of Governance, leaves nothing to chance. It scrutinizes states through 17 merciless indicators, ranging from corruption to public transparency to legal risks. While the report commends Morocco’s progressive alignment with FATF (Financial Action Task Force) standards, it points to the need to intensify financial control in order to one day rival the Scandinavian models of virtue like Finland.
