With Their Small Pensions, These Europeans Live Better in Morocco
Faced with often inadequate pensions, many Europeans, including Spaniards, are packing their bags for Morocco. The kingdom offers retirees an affordable cost of living as well as deep respect for the elderly.
In 2026, the standard retirement age in Spain is set at 66 years and 10 months for workers who have contributed less than 38 years and 3 months, and 65 years for others. But faced with limited pensions, many prefer to leave the country to improve their daily lives. Paco, a retiree who has been living in northern Morocco for several years, notices the difference: "With the retirement pension you get in Spain, Spanish people live much better here."

Beyond the financial aspect, the retiree savors a benevolent living environment. "In Morocco, there is still this human value of respect for the elderly," he confides, noting that this attitude has been lost in Spain. The local real estate market also proves highly attractive. While Tangier remains a fairly expensive international city, beachfront apartments can be found for 250 to 300 euros in the nearby city of Tétouan. For 600 euros, it is even possible to rent properties with excellent amenities and caretakers.

On the administrative front, expatriation is managed without difficulty. Paco explains that one simply needs to register with the Spanish consulate registry, whether in Tétouan, Larache, or Tangier, for the pension to be transferred to a local bank account. Spanish retirees finally benefit from a reassuring advantage on site: the Spanish Hospital, an establishment that serves both as a healthcare center and a reference point for their place of residence.
