AC Milan Star Bennacer Reveals Why He Chose Algeria Over Morocco for National Team

A few years after refusing to join the Atlas Lions, the best player of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and African Champion, has come back to the reasons that led him to choose Algeria over Morocco. In an interview with BeIN Sport, Ismael Bennacer, the AC Milan player, explained that the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) did not make him convincing sports proposals.
A few years ago, the player had already justified himself by explaining that Algeria had offered him more responsibilities than Morocco. "The Moroccans offered me to play with the Hopes, Algeria integrated me with the big ones," he had declared in 2017.
According to Hespress, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), very interested in the profile of the young player, had organized a meeting with his father to try to convince him to join the Moroccan selection.
After long discussions, the FRMF did not seem to meet the player’s expectations. Indeed, the Bennacer clan, according to the site, would have set certain conditions that the FRMF did not accept. "I wanted to represent one of my origins; my father is Moroccan and my mother is Algerian," he explained.
He finally opted for his "heart" country, Algeria. For him, this choice imposed itself on him. "So Algeria, when I went there, I don’t know how to describe it but I felt very good. I didn’t even have to choose, it was a quick choice and above all a choice of the heart. That’s what made me decide to take Algeria," he said during the interview.
