Michelin distinguishes 31 hotels in Morocco, just one behind the African leader

The Michelin Guide’s hotel selection is not limited to establishments awarded a Key. It also includes hotels, riads and guesthouses recommended by its inspectors. In Morocco, this collection now reaches 84 addresses, according to the official Michelin Guide selection.

Several establishments are listed there as new. In Marrakech, Riad Laz Mouassine & Wellness joins the guide, notably in the Mouassine district. Michelin is also adding Stellar Desert Camp, located in the region’s desert environment.

Casablanca welcomes another new address with Villa Sahrai. The economic capital is thus strengthening its presence in a Moroccan selection that until now has been largely dominated by Marrakech and its palaces, riads and luxury hotels.

In Salé, Waldorf Astoria Rabat Salé is also making its debut. Located in the Mohammed VI Tower, the establishment is the first Moroccan location of this luxury hotel brand belonging to the Hilton group.

The Michelin collection now extends to numerous Moroccan destinations. In addition to Marrakech, Casablanca and the Rabat-Salé metropolitan area, the guide recommends establishments in Fès, Tanger, Essaouira, Oualidia, Larache, El Jadida, Taghazout and Ifrane.

84 selected hotels, but only 31 distinguished

Being included in the general selection does not automatically mean receiving a Michelin Key. This award, presented as the hotel equivalent of the stars awarded to restaurants, distinguishes establishments offering the experiences judged to be the most remarkable.

In its global ranking unveiled on 18 September, the Michelin Guide lists 31 Key hotels in Morocco, placing the kingdom second in Africa behind South Africa, which has 32.

La Mamounia in Marrakech and Kasbah Tamadot in Asni retain the maximum distinction of three Keys. A new Moroccan address is also joining the ranking: Riad Mayfez Suites & Spa, in Fès, earns its first Key. Michelin even selected it among the notable new additions to its 2026 African selection.

To award its distinctions, the guide assesses in particular the architecture and design, the quality of the service, the establishment’s personality, its value for money and its ability to offer an experience connected to its surroundings.

Worldwide, the Michelin selection includes more than 9,000 hotels. Among them, 2,832 now have at least one Key: 2,020 establishments have received one, 657 have two and 155 hold the maximum distinction of three Keys.
