Merkel’s Party Proposes Ban on Islamic Veils in German Schools

A call for a ban on the Islamic veil in nurseries and primary schools has been launched by the Christian Democratic Party of Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The Commission tasked with studying the issues to be raised at the General Congress of the Party, scheduled for November 22-23 in Leipzig, has spoken very clearly on the wearing of the veil at school: "The wearing of the veil makes little girls appear as foreigners, both at school and in the playgrounds. We would like to avoid this."
According to the Commission’s recommendations, the Party is counting on the understanding of parents who should avoid imposing the veil on their children, adding: "We do not rule out the possibility of banning the wearing of the veil, as a last resort."
However, the wearing of the veil remains a controversial subject in Germany. Its ban could be illegal, according to the Constitution, knowing that the Constitutional Court had previously rejected such a request.
