Melilla President Slams Ex-Minister's Claim on Spanish Enclaves in Morocco

Like his counterpart in Ceuta, the President of Melilla, Eduardo de Castro, has condemned the remarks of former Housing Minister María Antonia Trujillo concerning the Spanish identity of the two autonomous cities, describing them as "despicable" and "disloyal".

During a conference in Tetouan, Trujillo stated that the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla "represent an affront to the territorial integrity of Morocco" and "are vestiges of the past that interfere" in its relations with Spain.

De Castro "firmly condemned" these statements by Trujillo, considering them "unfair, disloyal and disproportionate", coming from a former member of the Spanish government. The President of Melilla specified that no party, "including the PSOE", supports Trujillo’s remarks, inviting the former minister to come to Melilla to "see the reality".

De Castro also recalled that Melilla will celebrate in a few days, on September 17, 525 years of "Spanishness", which "cannot be forgotten" or questioned by "misplaced and totally unacceptable" statements. Trujillo cannot lose sight of the fact that she has Spanish nationality, "regardless of her family or social status," stressed De Castro.

The reaction of the President of Melilla after Trujillo’s remarks adds to those of the local PSOE, who described them as "false and unacceptable", reaffirming that "for the socialists, the Spanishness of the two autonomous cities is unquestionable".
