Melilla President Calls for Investigation into Deadly Migrant Incident at Morocco Border

The president of the autonomous city of Melilla, Eduardo de Castro, believes that the Moroccan authorities "will hide what happened" regarding the assault of migrants on the Melilla fence last Friday, which left at least 23 dead.
"This tragedy was not caused by us and the Civil Guard has nothing to do with it. It happened on the other side of the fence. It will be very difficult for the prosecutor’s office to investigate events that did not take place on Spanish territory," said Thursday Eduardo de Castro in an interview with La Vanguardia.
Deploring the way Moroccan police repressed the migrants, "treating them like objects," the president of Melilla called for an investigation to determine responsibilities. He also took the opportunity to request the protection of Melilla by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex). "More agents at the border would have a deterrent effect on Morocco," he argued.
