Meknes Officials Jailed for Embezzlement: Four Sentenced, Ordered to Repay 3 Million DH

Four civil servants accused of financial malpractices in Meknes were sentenced on Tuesday by the city’s court of appeal to one year in prison, including 4 months with a suspended sentence.
The court sentenced the general director of the municipal services of Meknes, the head of the financial resources division, the municipal tax collector and the head of the revenue collection service to this sentence and to pay a fine of 10,000 DH each. The convicted persons will also have to repay 3 million DH to the public treasury, according to Al Oâmk.

A fifth civil servant, head of the tax base service and a former municipal councilor, were acquitted. Another civil servant died in prison while the trial was ongoing.
The accused were prosecuted for "misappropriation and squandering of public funds, falsification of official and administrative documents and use of forgeries". The case had come to light in 2020 after an investigation commission was ordered to audit the management of the municipality’s budget.
