Meat Prices Plummet in Casablanca Markets During Ramadan as Demand Wanes

Due to moderate consumer demand, red and white meat prices have reached an unprecedented low in popular markets in Casablanca during this Ramadan period.
According to professionals in the sector in the Casablanca-Settat region, the retail price of beef has reached 56 dirhams per kilogram and 53 dirhams per kilogram for wholesale sales in urban slaughterhouses.
As for the price of live chicken, it has stabilized at around 11 dirhams per kilogram with merchants in popular neighborhoods, compared to 13 dirhams per kilogram at the beginning of last month.
This drop in prices is justified by the result of a combination of several factors, including an abundant supply that far exceeds a demand that remains moderate.
According to the head of a professional organization in the sector, who requested anonymity, the drop in demand for meat is due to the health crisis. It has caused a drop in income for a large segment of society, whose activity is linked to the informal sector.
Official statistics show that meat consumption in Morocco amounts to more than 15 kilograms per person per year. A figure that was expected to reach 18 kilograms in 2020, according to forecasts.
