Mauritania Poised to Revoke Recognition of Polisario Front in Western Sahara Dispute

Mauritania is preparing to soon announce the cancellation of the decree recognizing the Polisario Front. The current government wants to challenge this decision taken under the former president Mohamed Khouna Ould Haidala, and which has not been contradicted by any government so far for fear of retaliation or pressure.
Based on the position of the United Nations, which does not recognize the "Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR)" and the recent resolutions of its Security Council on the subject, Mauritania is working to challenge the decree recognizing the Polisario, reports the Mauritanian online newspaper Anbaa.info.
According to a source from the newspaper, successive governments have never approved this decision taken in February 1984 by the government of former President Mohamed Khouna Ould Haidala, but have not been able to cancel it for fear of retaliation or pressure. These governments have always feared that the challenge of this decision would cause tensions between Mauritania and the Polisario, protected by Algeria. At the time, the Mauritanian army was not capable of managing a conflict situation.
Today, the Mauritanian army ranks among the top continental armies. Mauritania can therefore take this historic decision, the newspaper reports.
