Mauritania Hikes Tariffs on Moroccan Imports, Sparking Price Concerns

The Mauritanian authorities have decided to increase customs duties on Moroccan products arriving on its territory via the Guerguerat border crossing.
According to some local and international media, the Mauritanian government has decided to increase customs duties on Moroccan goods transiting through the Guerguerat crossing to protect the interests of local producers who are facing strong Moroccan competition. But the measure has been poorly received by Mauritanian citizens who have seen the prices of fruits and vegetables from Morocco increase overnight.
The bulk of Moroccan trucks carrying goods to West African countries transit through Mauritania. Significant quantities of these transit products are poured onto the Mauritanian markets, which have become highly dependent on Moroccan fruits and vegetables.
