Marrakech Tourism Rebounds as Holiday Destination of Choice

Marrakech is emerging as a choice destination to celebrate the holidays. The ochre city is experiencing a resurgence of tourism activity, after a slump caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The crisis years, which saw the number of visitors drop from 13 million to 3.7 million, seem to be a thing of the past.

"Marrakech stands out as an ideal destination for the end-of-year holidays, attracting thousands of visitors every winter in search of a unique experience," says Zoubir Bouhoute, a tourism expert at Challenge. It is true that the mildness of the winter climate, compared to the often freezing temperatures known in Europe, the lively souks and the many festivities offered have something to seduce. Especially since Marrakech is an excellent starting point to discover the landscapes of the High Atlas. The city has also experienced a significant increase of 71% in arrivals.

Marrakech-Menara airport is also expected to welcome more than 10 million passengers in 2024. The city, for its part, is aiming for more than 10 million overnight stays, and even 12 million for the entire region. Hotels are showing occupancy rates that are dizzying: up to 90% for club hotels, 78% for 4-star hotels, 75% for 5-star hotels and 70% for luxury establishments.

For the holidays, the offers are numerous, with rates ranging from 450 to 3,500 DH depending on the services. Abdellatif Abouricha, from the Marrakech & Region Regional Tourism Council, confirms that the climate is a major asset. He adds: "The warmth of Moroccan hospitality is particularly evident during the holiday season. Whether you stay in a luxurious hotel complex or in a charming riad, the kindness and friendliness of the inhabitants will make you feel at home."

The French market dominates, accounting for 23% of arrivals and 27% of overnight stays. The United Kingdom shows a 40% increase in arrivals, followed by Spain and Italy. The average hotel occupancy rate is 72%, up 5 points.

Marrakech is also a meeting place for international events. Its airport, in full expansion, is preparing for the influx of supporters for the 2030 World Cup. The city, which has more than 80,000 beds, has already hosted major events such as the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, COP22 or the International Film Festival.
