Marrakech Taxi Fares Surge, Sparking Outrage and Calls for Intervention

The rates of large taxis between Marrakech and Had Rass El Ain in the province of Rhamna, as well as to many communes in the region, have increased to the great dismay of the inhabitants. Faced with this situation, the Moroccan Forum for Human Rights in the region is calling on the governor to intervene.
Taxi drivers at the Bab Doukkala station in Marrakech have applied unjustified increases to passengers, reveals the Moroccan Forum for Human Rights in the Marrakech-Safi region in a statement, specifying that the rate of certain journeys has increased by 5 dirhams at once, while the usual rate between Marrakech and Had Rass El Ain did not exceed 15 dirhams, according to the tariff approved by the local authorities. It condemns this 5 dirham increase on the legal rate recognized by the competent authorities.
The forum’s denunciations also concern all the abuses that occur at the Bab Doukkala taxi station, where some drivers and managers treat travelers in a humiliating manner. It denounces an increase in rates, the fact that some drive without the appropriate permit, and that others stand out for overloading - they take up to nine passengers, especially after the Maghrib prayer.
After painting this gloomy picture, the forum calls on the governor of the Marrakech-Safi region to intervene urgently to put an end to this illegal increase in rates by taxi drivers, detrimental to all Marrakechis and visitors.
