Marrakech Mayhem: Monkey Attack Sparks Tourist Safety Debate

A Moroccan expatriate (MRE) was bitten on the hand by a monkey this Thursday, September 25th, on the famous Jamaa el-Fna square in Marrakech, causing a panic among onlookers.
While she was trying to take a souvenir photo with the animal, the latter attacked her. The victim was taken to the hospital to receive care.
According to witnesses, the incident occurred as the woman, a Moroccan expatriate visiting with her family, was trying to pet the monkey. The unexpected attack by the animal surprised the crowd, and the tourist police quickly intervened to secure the area and allow the victim to be taken care of, who notably received preventive injections against rabies.
This event, which is not an isolated case on the square, immediately relaunched the debate on the use of animals for the entertainment of tourists. Many associative and professional actors are calling for the implementation of stricter regulations to ensure both the safety of visitors and the well-being of these animals.
