Marrakech: a Moroccan woman imprisoned after a customary marriage with a Gulf national

According to Assabah, a customary marriage was concluded four years ago between this woman, originally from Setti-Fatma in the Marrakech region, and this Gulf national. The couple were living a quiet life, until tensions arose. The woman would have insisted that the man regularize his situation by legalizing the customary marriage.

In her complaint, the Moroccan woman presented a fraudulent document from twelve witnesses, to which she attached photos of the wedding ceremony that took place according to Moroccan traditions. Despite these proofs, the young woman was incarcerated, pending the conclusions of the thorough investigation conducted by the investigating judge at the court of first instance in Marrakech.

The initial elements indicate that "the Gulf national was able to obtain from the competent administrative services of the city a certificate of engagement confirming his marital status as single, even though he does not have Moroccan nationality and even though he is married in his country of origin," says the daily.

How did the man manage to obtain this administrative document from the civil registry services of the city? The ongoing investigation will provide an answer to this question. For the moment, the Gulf national remains in provisional liberty at the disposal of the investigation.
