Marrakech Launches Crackdown on Illegal Construction Amid Urban Sprawl Concerns

The Marrakech city hall began on Monday the demolition of unauthorized constructions and illegal occupation of public domain in several neighborhoods of the city.
The fight against unauthorized constructions continues in Morocco. This time, it is in the neighborhoods of Marrakech that demolitions have taken place, reports Al Akhbar.
According to the newspaper, the city is facing an anarchic urbanization that has intensified with the pandemic and the electoral deadlines. Based on the reports of the inspection commissions, the local authorities have decided to raze several constructions.
The demolitions started in the Annakhil district and continued in the Gharbaoua douar where several bulldozers proceeded to demolish several shantytowns and anarchic houses.
According to some sources, the Daudiate neighborhood would also be affected by this operation. The commission there would have recorded several violations of urban planning rules in the "diour El Massakine" area, particularly on the part of the owners of cafes and restaurants.
