Marrakech Internet Woes Threaten Tourism, Daily Life: Lawmaker Demands Action

MP Abderrahmane Wafa, from the parliamentary group of the Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM) in the House of Advisors, questioned the delegate minister to the head of government in charge of digital transition and administrative reform, Ghita Mezzour, about the weakness of internet services in Marrakech and its impact on daily life and tourism.

"The city of Marrakech, which is one of the most important tourist cities in Morocco, is experiencing a real crisis in terms of Internet services, where the inhabitants of the city and its visitors suffer from frequent Internet service outages and a great weakness in the speed of the connection, which significantly affects their daily life and the reputation of the city as a global tourist destination," said MP Abderrahmane Wafa in an oral question addressed to the delegate minister to the head of government in charge of digital transition and administrative reform, Ghita Mezzour. According to his explanations, the inhabitants of the ochre city depend on the Internet in many aspects of their daily life, and it has become an integral part of their life. "However, frequent outages and weak bandwidth cause disruptions in several vital activities, resulting in a drop in productivity and communication difficulties," he lamented.

"Marrakech is known to be a global tourist destination attracting millions of visitors each year. Tourists largely depend on the Internet to plan their trips, book hotels, search for restaurants and activities, and share their experiences via social networks. However, the weakness of the Internet service in the city can lead to a decrease in satisfaction with the overall tourist experience, especially since several tourists have stated that they have encountered this problem and that it was difficult for them to find information on the places they wanted to visit due to the weakness of the Internet and that they could not share their experiences directly with their friends and family, which reduced the pleasure of their trip," he continued.

In the face of this situation, Wafa calls for urgent intervention with telecommunications providers to ensure better and more stable services.
