Marrakech’s Iconic Jemaa El Fna Square to Undergo $10 Million Renovation

Rehabilitation and modernization work on the famous Jemaa El Fna Square in Marrakech will be launched in the coming days. Estimated at 100 million dirhams, they should last seven months.
This project aims to restore the luster of this iconic square while preserving its cultural and historical authenticity. Carried out by the Al Omrane Marrakech-Safi group, the delegated project owner acting on behalf of the urban commune of Marrakech, this rehabilitation project of Jemaa El Fna Square aims to strengthen the tourist attractiveness of the ochre city, indicates the daily Les Inspirations Éco. At a cost of around 100 million dirhams, the work should last seven months and the delivery of the site is scheduled for January 2026.
The rehabilitation of Jemaa El Fna Square will be carried out in four phases. The first will consist of earthworks and upgrading of underground networks (electricity, sanitation, drinking water). The famous square in Marrakech will then benefit from a natural stone paving, in order to strengthen its visual appeal. The creation of a specific area for horse-drawn carriages, with a capacity of 28 spaces, is also planned. Similarly, the sanitary blocks will be rehabilitated or rebuilt.
The square will also be equipped with a new modern tourist information kiosk to allow Moroccan and foreign visitors to have a unique experience. Classified as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2008, Jemaa El Fna Square comes alive daily thanks to storytellers, musicians, snake charmers, and other street artists. In 2024, Marrakech welcomed nearly 4 million tourists, generating more than 6.4 million overnight stays.
