Marrakech’s Iconic Jemaa el-Fna Square Set for $6 Million Modernization

Marrakech will undertake a redevelopment project for Jemaa el-Fna square. The work will begin in March and aims to modernize this place while preserving its cultural and tourist importance.
The project, supervised by the Al Omrane Marrakech-Safi Agency, represents an investment of 63 million dirhams. It is not a radical transformation, but a modernization of the existing infrastructure.
The planned improvements concern the floor covering of the square, which will be completely redone. The drainage system will also be modernized. The electricity and drinking water supply will be strengthened, particularly for the areas occupied by street artists and traditional shows.
The project includes the construction of three catering areas. The adjacent garden, the Arsat El Bilk, will be redeveloped. Access to the square will be improved and the horse-drawn carriages will be stationed in a new location.
New lighting will be installed. Durable materials for intensive use will be used. The facades of the buildings around the square will be restored, respecting their original architecture. The organization of the spaces will be reviewed for better visitor circulation.
This project is part of a larger renovation program for the Marrakech medina. The objective is to strengthen the attractiveness of this heritage site on cultural, economic and tourist levels.
